Looking for an Optum EncoderPro alternative?

Optum Encoder Pro — EncoderPro.com, formally — runs $299.95 to $999.95 per user per year across three tiers. It is a serious tool. It is also priced and built for organisations rather than for the individual coder, and the tier with the compliance content in it costs $999.95.

Check this first. CPT codes aren't included yet. There is no surgical DRG grouper and no CAC or CDI workflow either. What you get is ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and HCPCS Level II lookup, and diagnosis-level claim checks with Medicare coverage, fees and HCC scoring. If you code physician procedures all day, stay with what you have.

Why coders move

The tier you need is the expensive one

Standard at $299.95 is a lookup box, and it is cheaper than we are — if that is genuinely all you want, buy it. The compliance checking lives in Expert, at $999.95 per user. Ours is $390, and there is only one version.

Enterprise software, individual coder

EncoderPro is shaped by the payers and health systems that buy it in volume. If you are one coder or a five-person practice, you are not the customer it was designed around, and it shows in every screen.

Nobody shows you how old the data is

We put the release and effective date of every dataset on the screen where you are using it. It is a small thing until the day an LCD changed and nobody told you.

What you give up by switching

Written by us, about them. If any of these matter more to you than the price, stay where you are — we would rather you did that than pay us for a year and find out.

  • CPT content, which we don't include yet
  • A 30-day free trial with no card, which is longer than our 7 days
  • Optum's own coding edits and payer-side tooling
  • Their Standard tier at $299.95 is cheaper than us, if lookup is all you need
  • A 30-day trial, against our 7.

Switching costs you nothing but the subscription: this is reference data, so there is no migration, no import, and nothing to set up. If we are wrong for you, you will know inside the seven days, and we never took a card.

One more axis worth comparing before you decide: most encoders now sell autonomous AI coding. Our position on AI medical coding software is different — assistive and citation-anchored, never a confident code you are asked to take on trust.

Common questions

How much does Optum EncoderPro.com cost?
Optum EncoderPro.com costs $299.95/yr (Standard), $549.95/yr (Professional), $999.95/yr (Expert), as published on Optum's own pricing page and verified August 4, 2026.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Optum EncoderPro.com?
MedicalCodingSoftware.org is $390 per year with everything included and a 7-day free trial that does not require a card. Note that Optum EncoderPro.com's entry tier may be cheaper than that if all you need is code lookup; the comparison that matters is against the tier that includes compliance checking.
Is there a free encoder for medical coding?
Partly, and the limit is worth understanding before you rely on one. Our ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and HCPCS Level II lookups are free with no account and no card — that covers every diagnosis code, every inpatient procedure code, and the drugs, supplies and equipment codes. What no free tool can include is CPT: those descriptors are licensed by the AMA, so any encoder offering CPT is paying for it and charging you accordingly. If your work is diagnosis-led, a free lookup genuinely is enough. If you code physician procedures all day, it is not, and anyone telling you otherwise is either unlicensed or about to ask for your card.
