Medical coding software that doesn’t fight you.

MedicalCodingSoftware.org is medical coding software for working coders: instant ICD-10-CM lookup, denial pre-checks that run before you submit, and guided decision trees that take a chart note to the right code. $390 a year, flat — no AAPC membership, no per-module upsell ladder.

What it should do

What medical coding software is supposed to do

Six things a coder needs from a reference tool. Most tools on the market do the first one and charge you like they do all six.

  • 01Find the code faster than you can say it

Search by code, clinical phrase, or the shorthand you actually type. `mdd` returns F33. `dm2` returns E11. `E119` jumps straight to E11.9. Nothing else on the market understands how coders type.

  • 02Catch the denial before you submit it

Paste a whole diagnosis set and get the conflicts back instantly: Excludes1 collisions, laterality contradictions, sequencing violations, header codes billed as if they were specific.

  • 03Explain the seventh character, every time

S72.001 is not a code you can bill. We say so, list the seventh characters that complete it, and tell you what each one means — instead of letting you find out from a rejection.

  • 04Show the data's age on the screen

Every dataset states which government file it came from and when it took effect. Stale reference data is the loudest complaint about $659/year incumbents, and the only honest fix is to date-stamp your own.

  • 05Answer 'why this code' with a citation

Guided decision trees walk a chart note to the correct code and keep the trail, so an audit gets the guideline paragraph the choice came from, not your memory of it.

  • 06Cost one number, once a year

$390/year. No membership to maintain, no per-module pricing, no CEU bundle you didn't ask for, and your renewal price never rises while you stay subscribed.

Each of those is written up on its own: coding compliance, claim scrubbing, denial prevention, audit defensibility and where we do and don’t use AI.

Honestly compared

How we compare to what you’re paying for now

Including the three rows where we lose. We do not have CPT content yet, so they have it and we do not. Optum’s free trial is 30 days and ours is 7. And if all you need is a lookup box, Codify’s entry tier costs $129. Those are true, so we printed them — a table that only flatters us would be a good reason to distrust every other row in it.

The comparison that matters is against the tier that actually does the job: the one with the compliance checks and the policy data in it. That tier costs $659 at Codify, $750 at Find-A-Code, and $999.95 at Optum. Ours costs $390, and it is our only tier.

Comparing something not in this table? We also cover TruBridge Encoder (formerly TruCode), and there is a vendor-by-vendor breakdown with each one’s full tier list. If you only want the prices, the pricing page has ours in one number.

Every competitor figure above is taken from that vendor’s own public pricing page and was verified on August 4, 2026. Find-A-Code prices exclude add-on modules, which run $80–$300/yr each. AAPC Codify prices shown are the non-member rate; membership ($229/yr) discounts them, though at a single seat the membership costs more than it saves. Straight answers

Common questions

What is medical coding software?
Medical coding software is a reference and verification tool that coders use to find the correct diagnosis and procedure codes and to check those codes against payer rules before a claim is submitted. It combines code lookup across code sets such as ICD-10-CM and HCPCS, coding notes and exclusions, medical-necessity policy, and edits that cause denials. The same category is often called medical billing and coding software — the coding side assigns the codes, the billing side lives with the denials, and one toolset serves both.
How much does medical coding software cost?
Medical coding software ranges from about $129 to $1,000 per user per year, depending on how much it does. Entry tiers are lookup only: AAPC Codify Coder Search is $129/yr and Optum EncoderPro Standard is $299.95/yr. Tiers that include compliance checks and payer policy cost considerably more: Codify Pro Fee is $659/yr, Find-A-Code Expert is $750/yr (before add-on modules at $80-$300 each), and EncoderPro Expert is $999.95/yr. MedicalCodingSoftware.org is $390 per year with everything included and no tiers, and a 7-day free trial that does not require a card. Prices verified August 4, 2026.
Does it include CPT codes?
Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, and the CMS policy datasets are available today. CPT codes aren't included yet; when they arrive, it is at no extra cost to you.
